Sven-Åke Wikers is a leading expert on flexible
multi-purpose arenas. The former leader of an ice
hockey team and a hotel executive is now the
managing director of Tocoman Sweden. The company
offers professional services for arena projects.
Building on experience
"I have been directing hotel businesses for many years in both Sweden and Ireland. Hotels and arenas are very similar in how they are used and how they work," says Sven-Åke. "I have also been arranging concerts and other events which have taught me the special technical and logistical requirements. I have managed a sports club and been an athlete at National Team level. All this gives me a good basis for developing arenas."
Arena is an opportunity with risks
A multi-purpose arena is a combination of the requirements of spectators, sports people, businesses, and the owner. Sven-Åke reminds how not to develop an arena, "If you just concentrate on a fancy design you'll end up with an expensive business failure."
Tocoman's approach is different. "Our arena concept is an inclusive process delivering a multi-purpose arena that lives up to its expectations for decades to come," says Sven-Åke.
Arena as a concept
The arena service concept is a tool for communicating the offering to the customers. The concept makes the customer proposition tangible and visible. It also serves as a framework for developing the service and involving other experts in the process.
Engaging the audience
Selling the idea of a new arena to municipal decision makers, business people, and sports executives is a long process. It requires lots of meetings and presentations.

Sven-Åke's presentations are actually training
sessions on the intricacies of an arena project. He
can describe the arena concept effectively to an
audience with anything from 15 minutes to two hours
to spare. His expertise on the subject matter
stands out.
Articulating the idea
We helped Tocoman to formulate the arena service concept, visualize it, and answer the key questions, like:
Tocoman's success
"In an arena project we are the partner who manages quality, makes sure that everything is made in the correct order, and sees that money is used wisely, on the right things," Sven-Åke promises.
Tocoman Sweden uses BIM (Building Information Modeling) techniques to manage design information during a project's life cycle. The model allows Tocoman to produce quantity and cost calculations at any stage of the project. It also serves as a collaboration platform for the whole design team.
"The projects we have been involved in vary from small sports halls to large stadiums. Project costs range from 10 million Euros to 170 million Euros. We have been involved in about 20 arena/sports projects," Sven-Åke concludes.
